Mykolaiv is a city, the regional center of Mykolaiv Oblast and the administrative center of Mykolaiv Raion, located on the left bank of the Bug Estuary at the confluence of the Southern Bug and Inhul rivers, 50 kilometers from the Black Sea. The city covers an area of 259.8 square kilometers, and its population as of May 2024 was about 430 thousand people. Founded in 1789 as a shipbuilding yard, Mykolaiv quickly transformed into a major industrial, political, business, and cultural center of Southern Ukraine, being the main center of shipbuilding on the Black Sea throughout the 19th century. In 2022, the city was awarded the honorary title of "Hero City of Ukraine" for the mass heroism and resilience shown by its citizens in defending against the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.
