Finland is a Nordic country located in Northern Europe, bordering Sweden, Norway, and Russia. It is washed by the Baltic Sea, including the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia. Its capital is Helsinki. It covers an area of 338,455 km² and is the eighth largest in Europe, with a population of about 5.6 million inhabitants. Historically, Finland was under Swedish rule, and from 1809, it became an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire. The country declared independence on December 6, 1917.
