Hero City of Ukraine
Sloviansk is a city and resort in the Kramatorsk district of Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, which is the administrative center of the Sloviansk urban territorial community. The city is located in the north of the region, in the valley of the Kazennyi Torets River, and historically belongs to Slobozhanshchyna. As of January 1, 2022, the city's population was 105,141 residents. Historically, the city was founded as the Tor fortress in 1645 (or 1676) to protect against Tatar raids and became a center for salt extraction and trade. In the 19th century, Sloviansk gained wide popularity as a balneological resort, known for its medicinal saline waters and muds, and in the 1880s, it transformed into an important railway hub.
