Poland is a country in Central Europe. The country's area is 312,685 km². The population is 38.484 million people. The capital is Warsaw. Poland was formed in the 10th century as a result of the unification of West Slavic tribes between the Vistula and Oder rivers. In the 16th century, it existed as a state formation called the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which also included Ukrainian lands. Later, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was divided between other states. Poland gained independence in 1918. After World War II, it was part of the socialist bloc. It is a member of NATO and actively helps Ukraine in the fight against Russian invaders. Famous Poles: Józef Piłsudski, Lech Wałęsa, John Paul II.
