The Republic of Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordering Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. Its capital is Chișinău. The country covers an area of approximately 33,846 square kilometers and, as of 2024 estimates, has a population of about 3.33 million people. Moldova declared independence on August 27, 1991, during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Since gaining independence, Moldova has chosen a path of democratic governance and market reforms. It holds candidate status for EU membership. Within the state, there are two autonomous entities: Gagauzia and Transnistria.
