Mukachevo

An important industrial and cultural center of the Zakarpattia region of Ukraine
Mukachevo is a city in the Zakarpattia Oblast of Ukraine, located in the central part on the Latorytsia River, at the junction of the spurs of the Ukrainian Carpathians and the Zakarpattia Lowland. Its area is 27.9 km², and its population in 2025 is 86,061 people. The city is the administrative center of the Mukachevo Raion and the Mukachevo urban hromada, ranking second in the region in terms of economic potential and population after Uzhhorod. Founded in the 8th or 9th century, with the first written mention in 896, Mukachevo has a long and rich history. For centuries, the city was an important trade route and a significant fortress, being part of various states, including Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union, before becoming part of independent Ukraine.
