Regional center of Ukraine
The city of Cherkasy is located in the central part of Ukraine, on the right bank of the Dnieper River. It is the administrative center of Cherkasy Oblast and Cherkasy Raion, with a population of about 269,000 people as of 2022. The city played a key role in the history of Ukrainian Cossacks. For centuries, Cherkasy was part of various states, including the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Hetmanate, and the Russian Empire, before becoming part of independent Ukraine.
