According to the U.S. Southern Command, the operation targeted suspected drug traffickers using one of the known smuggling routes. At the same time, the U.S. military did not provide evidence that the vessel was actually carrying drugs.
As AP notes, since the beginning of September, when the administration of President Donald Trump launched a campaign against so-called "narco-terrorists" in Latin America, at least 211 people have been killed as a result of U.S. strikes on vessels. Washington claims that such actions are aimed at combating drug trafficking and deadly overdoses in the United States.
At the same time, human rights activists, lawyers, and some U.S. lawmakers question both the legality and effectiveness of such operations.
Senators have already called on the Pentagon to release full video recordings of the strikes, and the U.S. Department of Defense Inspector General is investigating whether the military followed established procedures when selecting targets.
