The Slovak Republic is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It covers an area of approximately 49,000 km² with a population of over 5.4 million people. The capital and largest city is Bratislava. Historically, after the Velvet Revolution of 1989, Slovakia peacefully transitioned to democracy, gaining independence on January 1, 1993. Since then, it has developed a modern market economy, and its territory has been inhabited since ancient times, with Slavic tribes arriving in the 5th–6th centuries.
