Historically, after the Velvet Revolution of 1989, Slovakia peacefully transitioned to democracy, gaining independence on January 1, 1993. Since then, it has developed a modern market economy, and its territory has been inhabited since ancient times, with Slavic tribes arriving in the 5th–6th centuries.
