Ternopil

Regional center of Ukraine
Ternopil is the political and administrative, economic and business, religious, and cultural center of Ternopil Oblast, located on the banks of the Seret River. It is one of the three main centers of the historical and geographical region of Galicia, as well as the main city of Halychian Podillia. The city was founded in 1540 as a fortress to protect against Tatar attacks. With an area of 86 square kilometers and a population of 225,004 people as of January 1, 2022, Ternopil plays a significant role in Western Ukraine. A unique feature of the city is the artificial pond in its center, which has existed for over 400 years and is one of the oldest in Ukraine. The longest cave in Eurasia, Optimistic Cave, is located 94 kilometers from Ternopil. The total length of its passages is 267 kilometers. The notion that Ternopil is a "faine misto" (a fine city) emerged in 1994 when the band "Braty Hadiukiny" released a song with the same name. It was included in the album "Bulo ne liubyty" (It was not to love) and instantly became popular. Since 2013, the "Faine Misto" festival has been held in the city.
