Libya is a country in North Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Its area is about 1.8 million sq. km, making it the fourth largest in Africa. The population is approximately 7 million people. The capital is Tripoli. Historically, Libya was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire and then became an Italian colony. The country gained independence in 1951. After the events of 2011, which led to the overthrow of long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has been experiencing a prolonged period of political instability.
