The Day of Remembrance of Saint Martyr and Archdeacon Euplus

According to the new calendar, on August 11, people honor Archdeacon Euplus, who lived in Sicily at the beginning of the fourth century and suffered for the Christian faith during the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian. Among the people, this day was called "Euplus" or "Euplus Day." Traditionally, this was the day when people began gathering white and cauliflower cabbage, preparing it for the winter.

For those who follow the old calendar: On August 11, the memory of Saint Martyr Callinicus is honored. Among the people, this day was called "Kalynnyk." Peasants paid attention to the weather: if there was a morning frost on Kalynnyk, it foretold an early and cold autumn. On this day, they also gathered viburnum berries, which were considered a powerful remedy against colds.
