What is celebrated on June 16 in Ukraine and the world
Kyiv • UNN
The world marks World Sea Turtle Day, the Day of the African Child, and the literary Bloomsday. Believers honor Saint Tikhon and observe the Apostles' Fast.

This summer day brings with it important social initiatives, environmental reminders, as well as one of the most famous and unusual literary holidays in the world. At the same time, the period of the Apostles' Fast continues in the church calendar, reports UNN.
World Sea Turtle Day
An important environmental holiday established with the support of the UN. The date was chosen in honor of the birthday of Archie Carr, a prominent American ecologist who dedicated his life to the study and protection of sea turtles. The holiday calls for fighting plastic pollution in the oceans, which is the main threat to these ancient reptiles, as well as protecting their nesting sites.
International Day of Family Remittances
An official UN day that honors the labor of over 200 million migrant workers around the world. They work every day far from home to send money to their families, significantly supporting not only their loved ones but also the economies of their home countries.
International Day of the African Child
A commemorative date established by the Organization of African Unity. It is dedicated to the memory of the children who died in 1976 during the Soweto uprising (South Africa) while defending their right to a quality education. Today, this day draws attention to the problems of access to education and basic medicine for children on the African continent.
Bloomsday
A true celebration for literature lovers. It is dedicated to the Irish writer James Joyce and his most famous novel, "Ulysses." The action of the entire massive work takes place in Dublin on exactly one day — June 16, 1904. Every year on this day, Joyce fans around the world dress in Edwardian-era costumes, read excerpts from the novel, walk the route of the protagonist Leopold Bloom, and reenact events from the book.
Fresh Veggies Day
An unofficial summer holiday that perfectly fits the middle of June. It is a great reason to support local farmers, go to the market, buy fresh vegetables or greens, and prepare a large, vitamin-rich salad.

Tuesday of the Apostles' Fast (Petrivka)
The summer fast continues. According to church regulations, on Tuesday there is a relaxation for believers: it is permitted to consume hot food with the addition of vegetable oil, as well as mushrooms.
Memorial Day of Saint Tikhon, Bishop of Amathus
According to the new (Revised Julian) calendar, which the OCU and the UGCC have adopted, this day honors Saint Tikhon, who lived in Cyprus in the 4th-5th centuries. He was known for his kindness, mercy toward the poor, and active struggle against pagan cults, for which he was elected bishop. In folk tradition, the saint was often asked for healing from various diseases.
