What is celebrated on June 17 in Ukraine and the world
Kyiv • UNN
The world marks the Day to Combat Desertification and Drought and Garbage Man Day. In the church calendar, the Apostles' Fast continues, and the memory of three Persian martyrs is honored.

This day is dedicated to one of the most pressing environmental problems of our time under the auspices of the UN. Also celebrated today are interesting unofficial and gastronomic holidays, and in the church calendar, it is a strict fast day, UNN reports.
World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought
An important official UN date established in 1995. The purpose of this day is to draw humanity's attention to the problems of land degradation, depletion of fertile soils, and the catastrophic shortage of fresh water.
Ecologists emphasize that due to climate change and irrational use of resources, the problem of droughts is becoming a global threat to food security.
World Croc Day
A global initiative created to protect these unique ancient reptiles. The holiday calls for the fight against poaching and the destruction of the natural habitats of alligators and crocodiles, many species of which are currently on the brink of extinction.
Global Garbage Man Day
A socially important holiday designed to express gratitude to people whose hard work we often do not notice. It is the employees of municipal and private waste removal services who care for the sanitary condition, cleanliness, and ecology of our cities every day.
Eat Your Vegetables Day
This holiday is a logical continuation of yesterday's Fresh Veggies Day. It is a great opportunity for parents to encourage children to eat healthy, and for adults to review their diet and add more fiber and vitamins to it.
Apple Strudel Day
A delicious holiday dedicated to one of the most famous European desserts, which originated in Vienna. Thin stretched dough, plenty of apples, cinnamon, and raisins—the perfect treat for evening tea or coffee.
Wednesday of the Apostles' Fast (Petrivka)
The second week of the summer Apostles' Fast continues. Since Wednesday is traditionally a day of remembrance of Judas' betrayal, according to church statutes, it (like Friday) is a day of stricter fasting. Fasting believers are expected to abstain from meat, eggs, and dairy products, as well as from dishes with added vegetable oil and fish.
Memorial Day of the Holy Martyrs Manuel, Sabel, and Ismael
According to the new (Revised Julian) calendar, three brothers from Persia are honored on this day. According to legend, in the 4th century, they arrived at the court of the Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate as ambassadors of peace, but because of their refusal to participate in pagan sacrifices, they were subjected to torture and executed.
