Meloni expressed support for Trump and opposed European “appeasement forces” in Ukraine

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed skepticism about the proposal of France and Great Britain to send a European military contingent to Ukraine. This is reported by the Financial Times, writes UNN.

Details

It is reported that despite the fact that many in Europe fear that Trump is preparing to force Ukraine into a disadvantageous peace agreement, Meloni expressed faith in his efforts, repeatedly emphasizing the need for strong guarantees so that Russia does not resume the war in the future.

In particular, she remains skeptical about the proposal of France and Great Britain to send European "forces of appeasement" to Ukraine, which, according to her, may be perceived by Moscow as a provocation.

"We must be careful here. It can be seen more as a threat," she said.

Instead, she advocates extending NATO's Article 5 on mutual defense to Ukraine - without actually admitting Kyiv to the alliance - which she says would be "easier and more effective" than other proposals.

This idea caused some confusion among European officials, since collective defense is the main function of NATO, and the US refused to provide Ukraine with such guarantees.

While British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are actively working to mobilize support for Ukraine, visiting the White House and convening meetings of EU leaders, Meloni has taken a more restrained stance

"I'm not interested in saying: "I'm in the middle, I'm the main character. Not now. The stakes are too high," she summarized.

Reminder

Earlier, UNN wrote that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni insists on extending the scope of Article 5 of the Treaty on NATO to Ukraine.

She emphasized that this proposal "should be put on the negotiating table".
