Massive power outages possible in Ukraine this summer due to capacity deficit - analysts' forecast

Ukraine may face electricity shortages and consumer blackouts during the summer months, despite electricity imports and a significant contribution from solar generation. This is stated in a forecast by the DiXi Group analytical center, Reuters reports, according to UNN.

Details

According to expert estimates, under moderate temperatures and in the absence of new damage to the power system, the capacity deficit during peak consumption hours could reach 0.7 GW. If air temperatures rise significantly, this figure could increase to 2.4 GW.

Repairs at NPPs heighten risks

DiXi Group notes that the situation will be complicated by planned maintenance of power units at nuclear power plants, which remain the backbone of the Ukrainian energy system.

With the rise in average daily temperatures, hourly power outages will be inevitable, and a deficit may occur even at night when demand is at its lowest

– the forecast states.

In the event of hot weather and new damage to energy infrastructure, the deficit could grow to 6.2 GW against a projected demand of 15.8 GW, which is about 40%.

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Russia has regularly attacked Ukrainian power generation and transmission facilities. During the previous winter period, large-scale blackout schedules were implemented in many regions due to damage to energy capacities.
