Germany wants to host the 2040 Olympics on the anniversary of reunification

Germany's Interior Minister has signed a preliminary agreement on the 2040 Olympic bid. The government will allocate 6.95 million euros for preparations, and several cities have expressed interest in hosting the Games.

German Interior Minister Nancy Feser signed a preliminary agreement on August 2 to submit a bid to host the Olympic Games in 2040, UNN reports citing DW.

"The government unanimously supports Germany's new bid to host the Olympics and Paralympics. We want to use the great opportunities that the Olympic Games offer for our cohesion, our economy and our sport," Feather said at an event in Paris, which is currently hosting the Summer Olympics.

The minister noted that 2040 will mark the 50th anniversary of German reunification, so applying for this year will be a "strong symbol" and "a sign of democracy.

The German government has announced that it is going to allocate 6.95 million euros for the preparation of the application.

Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, and the Rhineland-Ruhr region have expressed interest in participating in the bid to host the Olympics. German high-ranking sports officials have indicated that it is likely that two cities or regions will apply.

After the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the next host of the Summer Games in 2028 will be Los Angeles, USA, and in 2032 the Olympics will be held in Brisbane, Australia.
