On Thursday, U.S. President Joe Biden pledged to protect the countries' interests in the face of danger during his first joint summit with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on growing tensions with China.

The meeting took place amid rising tensions following repeated clashes between Chinese and Philippine vessels in the disputed waterway.

Any attack on Philippine aircraft, ships, or armed forces in the South China Sea will result in the invocation of our mutual defense treaty
