Suspects entered false data to seize millions of hryvnias for road repairs: they face 12 years in prison

A scheme to embezzle budget funds for road repairs was exposed in Zakarpattia region. The heads of the contracting organizations have been notified of suspicion and face up to 12 years in prison.
In Zakarpattia, law enforcement officers exposed a scheme to embezzle budget funds and notified the heads of contractors of suspicion. UNN reports with reference to the press service of the National Police of Ukraine.

For misappropriation of budget funds, those involved in the road repair fraud scheme may face 7 to 12 years in prison.
The scheme to embezzle budget funds was exposed by operatives of the Strategic Investigations Department in Zakarpattia region and investigators of the Regional Police Investigation Department.
The traces revealed the following:
- The commercial entities that won the tenders for the repair of road sections are controlled by one person. It is noted that the offenders entered false information in the reporting documentation in order to seize funds.
In particular, regarding the overstatement of the amount of construction work actually performed and its cost, the police press service writes.
- Funds were transferred to the accounts of contractors.
- According to the results of expert investigations, the amount of money seized by the defendants reaches UAH 5 million.
Based on the evidence obtained, the heads of the contractors were served suspicion notices under Part 3 and 5 of Article 27, Part 5 of Article 191 (misappropriation, embezzlement or seizure of property through abuse of office), Part 3 of Article 27, Part 1 of Article 366, Part 1 of Article 366 (forgery) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Measures are being taken to compensate the state for the losses incurred.
