Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said that the country may veto new EU sanctions against Russia if they hinder peace talks. He also suggested the possibility of lifting existing sanctions.

Slovakia will not support new European Union sanctions against Russia if they threaten a peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine. This was stated by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico to members of the European Committee of the Slovak Parliament, UNN reports with reference to Noviny.

We cannot fanatically insist on sanctions at any cost. There may come a time when we say that we do not agree, or I think that this is against the peace steps that are currently being taken. As long as we perceive the attempt of further sanctions as something aimed at undermining the peace process, we are ready to veto it

- said the Prime Minister.

According to Fico, the entire European Union sanctions list, which includes more than 2,400 individuals and organizations with frozen assets and travel bans, could be lifted in the coming weeks or months. More recently, member states of the European bloc agreed to extend sanctions against citizens and companies of Russia and Belarus for six months. They reached an agreement after Slovakia and Hungary lifted the blockade, excluding several names from the list.
