As of December 16, 2025, the State Duma of the Russian Federation openly states that the service will be blocked within the next year. Content creators are already advised to "voluntarily" migrate to state-controlled resources. The official reason is "violation of legislation," but the real reason is YouTube's refusal to serve Russian state censorship.
The blocking of the video hosting service is a continuation of a series of bans covering messengers, online games, and video communication services. In parallel, the Russian authorities are destroying the infrastructure for bypassing censorship, trying to establish complete control over information. Under the slogans of "digital sovereignty," Russia is gradually building a totalitarian model where the state unilaterally decides what citizens should watch and whom to trust.
