Modi and Carney aim to reach Canada-India trade deal by December G20 summit

Modi and Carney plan to sign a trade agreement by the end of the year. The parties aim to double trade turnover between the countries in response to new US tariffs.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that he would like to conclude a trade agreement with Canada before his visit to Canada later this year, UNN reports citing AP.
In turn, Carney said he would like to see it completed before the G20 summit in Florida in mid-December.
Carney met with Modi at the G7 summit and noted that Modi wants to double trade between Canada and India. Carney aims to double trade with non-US countries over the next decade after Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods.
Relations between India and Canada became strained under Carney's predecessor following the 2023 assassination of a Sikh activist in Canada.
