During a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Laos as part of the ASEAN ministerial meeting, the EU High Representative called on the Chinese side to promote the peace process in Ukraine and stop exporting dual-use goods to Russia, which allows the aggressor to increase arms production. “The High Representative said that the EU and China should recognize each other's concerns. This primarily concerns China's support for Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine. The High Representative explained why the European Union considers Russia's war against Ukraine an existential threat to Europe. He expressed concern that China's exports of a large number of dual-use goods and elements support Russia in increasing the production of its military equipment,” the statement said.
As noted, Josep Borrell asked China to use its influence on Russia to make its own contribution to ending this war. He asked China to support the peace process in Ukraine and noted that the joint statement of China and Brazil of May 2024 is not a move in this direction.
