Beer sales in Germany for Euro 2024 decreased despite expectations: the reason is given
Kyiv • UNN
Despite Euro 2024, beer sales in Germany were down 0.6% due to weather and inflation. Breweries complain about rising costs, but non-alcoholic beer is gaining popularity.
Beer sales in Germany fell by 25.8 million liters in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year, despite expectations for Euro 2024. The reason for this was weather conditions and inflation. This was reported by DW, according to UNN.
"Beer sales in Germany fell by about 0.6%, or 25.8 million liters, in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year. German breweries did not see the sales growth they had hoped for during the Euro 2024 football championship, which Germany hosted in the summer," the publication writes.
It is noted that the reason for this was the weather conditions: heavy rains and lower than usual temperatures do not allow fans to visit beer gardens and open-air bars. Inflation has also hit the beer industry hard: breweries complain about the rapid increase in raw material and logistics costs. However, at the same time, non-alcoholic beer has also grown in popularity.
"During the European Football Championship, low temperatures and frequent thunderstorms prevented many bars from operating and many garden parties were canceled," said Holger Eichele, managing director of the German Brewers Association.
There was also a decline in sales of popular German blends such as beer and lemonade or cola. Compared to the first half of 2023, 5.4% fewer beer blends were sold, although blends account for only about 4.8% of beer sales.
