Kupiansk is a city in Ukraine, the administrative center of the Kupiansk Raion of Kharkiv Oblast. The city is located on the banks of the Oskil River, which is a tributary of the Siversky Donets, and is approximately 40 kilometers from the border with Russia. Before Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, the population of Kupiansk was over 25,000 people. The history of Kupiansk dates back to 1655, when it was founded as the Cossack settlement of Kupynka, which served as a fortress. Subsequently, the city developed as an important trade route and became the second railway hub in Kharkiv Oblast. The city is also known for its strategic location as a railway and road junction.
