Trump harmed NATO more in a few weeks than Putin in several years - Czech President

Czech President Petr Pavel stated that recent words by US President Donald Trump about doubts regarding NATO's role have caused more damage to the Alliance's credibility than Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has in many years. This is reported by The Guardian, writes UNN.

Speaking at an event at Charles University in Prague, Pavel — a retired NATO general and former head of the NATO Military Committee — emphasized that the Alliance is built on the principles of deterrence and collective defense.

"As soon as we start questioning the Alliance as a single entity, ready to act together and very decisively, its role will be lost," said the Czech president.

And he noted: "It must be said that Donald Trump has done more to undermine confidence in the Alliance in the last few weeks than Vladimir Putin has in many years. This, of course, is not good news."

Trump's criticism, apparently, does not take into account the fact that NATO is a defensive alliance, and "not an alliance that will automatically help in wars waged outside its borders."

- noted Petr Pavel.
