The decision is another step by the administration of President Donald Trump as part of its trade policy, following the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that a number of previously imposed tariffs were illegal.

According to him, the tariffs are being imposed under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative noted that the new tariffs apply to 60 countries, which account for 99.4% of U.S. imports.
Countries that have agreed to impose and effectively enforce a ban on imports of goods made using forced labor will pay a 10% tariff. For those that have not undertaken such commitments, the rate will be 12.5%.
