Sowing season 2024: farmers sowed almost 70 thousand hectares of early spring crops despite the war

Despite the ongoing war with Russia, Ukrainian farmers sowed 68.3 thousand hectares of spring grains and pulses in 12 regions for the 2024 harvest.
Almost 70 thousand hectares in 12 regions of Ukraine have been sown with early spring crops for the 2024 harvest. The course of this year's sowing campaign was reported by the Press Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, citing data from the Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy, UNN reports.
Despite Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine, agrarians continue to work to ensure food security, the Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy informs. Thus, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, as of March 7, 68.3 thousand hectares were sown with spring grain and legumes in 12 regions that have started sowing spring crops.

It is noted that farmers sowed barley - 38.9 thousand hectares, peas - 23.3 thousand hectares, wheat - 4.3 thousand hectares and oats - 1.5 thousand hectares.
"Agrarians in Odesa region are leading the way in the spring sowing campaign. They have already sown 33 thou hectares, of which 0.5 thou hectares are under wheat, 17.5 thou hectares under barley, 14.3 thou hectares under peas and 0.7 thou hectares under oats.
Mykolaiv region planted 0.7 thou hectares of wheat, 11.5 thou hectares of barley, 6 thou hectares of peas and 0.2 thou hectares of oats; Ternopil region - 0.8 thou hectares of wheat, 4.3 thou hectares of barley and 0.7 thou hectares of peas; Khmelnytsky region - 2.2 thou hectares of barley and 0.3 thou hectares of oats; Vinnytsia region - 1.8 thou hectares of wheat, 0.4 thou hectares of barley and 1.2 thou hectares of peas.
In the Rivne region, the plan for the spring sowing season is to plant crops on 438,000 hectares, which is no less than the previous year. According to the local agricultural organization, farmers have started with spring crops: they are sowing oats, wheat and barley.
At the same time, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy reported in the State Agrarian Register that 70% of respondents plan to increase the area under soybeans by 21% on average compared to 2023, based on the results of a survey of farmers' preparations for the spring crops sowing campaign for the 2024 harvest.
The survey also showed that during the spring sowing season, Ukrainian farmers will prioritize pulses, which will increase by 11%, and spring barley by 7%. The area under spring rapeseed is expected to increase by 24%, sugar beet by 17%, and corn by 9%. The area under sunflower may potentially decrease.
At the same time, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy predicts that the area under spring crops may decrease by 0.5 million hectares or 3.7% compared to last season.
