Rubio stated that the US did not talk about the annexation of Greenland

The US did not talk about the annexation of Greenland. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, despite the fact that Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the annexation of Greenland will take place, UNN reports.

Details

Rubio commented on the statement of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that one country cannot annex another country.

We are not annexing anything. We will respect the self-determination of the Greenlanders. Denmark should focus on the fact that Greenland does not want to be part of Denmark. That's what we should focus on. We didn't talk about annexing anything...If they make that decision, they will make that decision

- Rubio said during a briefing.

He noted that, for example, China could come and offer them a lot of money "and they will depend on China already."

Context

In early March, Trump stated that the annexation of Greenland will take place.

At the end of March, President Donald Trump stated that the annexation of Greenland is inevitable. There is a possibility to do this without military force, but he "is not taking anything off the table."

Trump also previously promised to enrich the people of Greenland in case the island joins the United States.

Addition

During a visit to Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned the United States that America cannot annex another country.

In March, Mette Frederiksen reacted to a recent statement by US Vice President Jay Dee Vance, in which he accused the country of insufficient protection of Greenland.

Then, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance, during a visit to Greenland, stated that the country is an important part of the security not only of the United States, but of the whole world. He also noted that, according to Trump, the US needs to have a stronger position in Greenland.

On March 29, The Guardian, citing a survey, reported that 85% of Greenlanders are against the possible accession to the United States.
