Kuzin on monkeypox: the risk for Ukraine is assessed as very low

Deputy Minister of Health Ihor Kuzin said that the risk of monkeypox for Ukraine is estimated to be very low. Only isolated cases have been registered in Ukraine, without an epidemic rise.

The risk for Ukraine has been assessed as very low, as Ukraine has faced cases of monkeypox, but there has been no epidemic rise.

This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Health, Chief State Sanitary Doctor Igor Kuzin during a briefing, reports a correspondent of UNN .

Regarding monkeypox, we had several cases in Ukraine. Thanks to the support of the European Union, we had a state-of-the-art monkeypox vaccine that was targeted at vaccinating high-risk groups, including men who have sex with men, healthcare workers

- Kuzin said.

According to him, as of today, after the registration of isolated cases in Kyiv and some other cities, there has been no further increase in the incidence. 

"Therefore, most likely, the risk for Ukraine is assessed as very low, because we faced something like this at the beginning... and fortunately there was no epidemic rise," Kuzin said.

Context The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, convened an "emergency" meeting of international experts on the spread of monkeypox.

In July, it was reported that the WHO was concerned about the spread of a new strain of monkeypox, mpox, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to preliminary data, this mutation, , is transmitted between people more easilythan other known strains.
