Asif Merchant, 46, was arrested in the United States on suspicion of organizing a plot to assassinate American politicians, including Donald Trump. The court remanded the suspect in custody without bail.

The United States has detained a Pakistani man with alleged ties to Iran, who is accused of attempting to assassinate American politicians. Former President Donald Trump was one of the people he considered as a possible target. This was reported by Bloomberg on Wednesday, August 7, according to UNN.

According to investigators, 46-year-old Asif Merchant organized a plot to assassinate an unidentified politician or US government official on US soil. According to the criminal complaint, Merchant, after spending some time in Iran, traveled to the United States from Pakistan in April and contacted a person who he believed could help him in the plot.

It is noted that former President Donald Trump was one of the people Merchant considered as a possible target. Another agency source said there was no evidence that the Pakistani's plan had anything to do with last month's assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry said it was in contact with U.S. officials about the case and was awaiting further details. Iran's mission to the UN said it "has not received any communication on this issue from the US government".

The court remanded Merchant in custody without bail, stating that he posed a "serious" threat to the United States and could flee.
