The UN Secretary-General warns that the Middle East is on the verge of a devastating full-scale conflict and calls for maximum restraint.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at a meeting of the UN Security Council called for maximum restraint on Sunday, April 14, after Iran's attack on Israel. He reminded the members of the world organization that retaliatory actions involving the use of force are prohibited by international law, UNN reports .

"The Middle East is on the brink. The people of the region face the real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," Guterres said at a UN Security Council meeting.

Context

Iran launched the attack because of an alleged Israeli strike on its embassy in Syria on April 1, which killed senior Iranian commanders.

Iran launched about 300 drones, ballistic and cruise missiles toward Israel on Saturday evening in response to the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, which killed seven Islamic Revolutionary Guard officers, including two senior commanders.

Israel claims to have intercepted about 99 percent of the shells and drones launched at their country.
