Ukraine confirmed the start of pilot training on Gripen in 2026

Ukraine plans to start training pilots on Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets as early as 2026. This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose words are quoted by Defence Blog, writes UNN.

Details

We are grateful for the new program to strengthen the protection of our skies… We very much hope that our pilots will begin training this year

— Zelenskyy said.

This refers to the transition from previous discussions to practical personnel training. The training of pilots and technical staff is a key stage before the possible introduction of aircraft into combat operation.

This is part of a broader process of modernizing Ukraine's Air Force and transitioning from Soviet platforms to Western fighter jets.

Sweden's role

Zelenskyy emphasized the growing partnership with Sweden, which is among the top five largest donors to the Ukrainian military.

For 2026-2027, Stockholm has allocated about 80 billion kronor (approximately $8.8 billion) in military aid. For comparison, in 2022-2025, the amount of support was 88.1 billion kronor.

Long-term plans

Negotiations regarding Gripen intensified in October 2025 after the signing of a declaration on defense cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson then stated that this was "the beginning of a long journey for the next 10-15 years."

This involves not only the supply of aircraft, but also training, maintenance, and the integration of defense technologies.

Possible production in Ukraine

The parties are also considering the option of partial localization of Gripen production in Ukraine.

According to preliminary plans, this could start around 2033. In the future, the formation of a fleet of 100-150 such fighters is being considered, but final decisions on contracts and delivery times have not yet been made.
