U.S. President Donald Trump wants FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. This is reported by UNN citing The New York Post.

According to the publication, the 56-year-old Infantino grew close to Trump during the organization of this year's FIFA World Cup. The football official of Swiss origin made every effort to win Trump's favor and engage him in cooperation, even presenting him with the first FIFA Peace Award in December.

Trump believes that Infantino is respected worldwide and acknowledges that he has a special ability to unite people

The next Secretary-General will be elected this year to replace Portuguese António Guterres, who is stepping down at the end of December.

To take this position, Infantino will need to secure the support of 15 members of the Security Council, followed by confirmation from the General Assembly. At the same time, five permanent members of the UN Security Council — the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, and France — have veto power.

Besides Infantino, candidates for the post of UN Secretary-General include former President of Chile Michelle Bachelet and current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi.
