Trump's meeting on Iran took place as the head of the Pakistani army, Field Marshal Asim Munir, traveled to Tehran, apparently in a last-minute attempt to bridge differences and prevent a resumption of the war. A delegation from Qatar also arrived in Tehran on Friday to support mediation efforts.

On Saturday, Munir was scheduled to meet with General Ahmad Vahidi, commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a key player in Iran's decision-making process.

A U.S. official briefed on the diplomatic efforts described the talks as "painful." The U.S. official stated that draft documents are being "sent back and forth every day" without much progress.

During the meeting, Trump was briefed on the progress of the negotiations and various scenarios in the event of their failure.

Hours after the meeting, the White House announced a change to Trump's weekend schedule. After a scheduled speech in New York on Friday night, he was to return to Washington rather than stay at his golf club in Bedminster. A source close to Trump and a second source familiar with the situation told Axios that Trump has become increasingly frustrated with the negotiations with Iran over the past few days. On Tuesday, he told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he wanted to give diplomacy one more chance, but by Thursday evening, he was leaning toward ordering a strike, the two sources said. A source close to Trump said the U.S. President raised the possibility of conducting a decisive major military operation, after which he could declare victory and end the war.

Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Friday that negotiations are continuing, but a deal is still far off.
