Syria's new government announces large-scale reform of intelligence services

The newly appointed head of the Syrian intelligence services, Anas Khattab, announced the complete disbanding of all Assad-era intelligence organizations. It is planned to create a new security system that takes into account the interests of the people.

The secret services, which were feared as an instrument of oppression under the ousted ruler Bashar al-Assad, will be completely disbanded.

The new head of Syria's intelligence services, Anas Khattab, announced on Saturday a plan to “restructure” all intelligence organizations that functioned under Bashar al-Assad.

The secret services, considered a tool of repression under ousted ruler Bashar al-Assad, will be completely disbanded, Chattab said yesterday, according to the state news agency SANA.

“The security institution will be reformed after all services are disbanded and restructured, in a way that respects our people,” Anas Khattab said two days after being appointed by the new government that ousted Bashar al-Assad in December.

The UN investigation team visited Damascus for the first time since 2016 to investigate war crimes committed by the Assad regime. The new Syrian government has agreed to cooperate and help collect evidence.
