Romanian President appoints new candidate for Prime Minister - Reuters

Romanian President Nicușor Dan has appointed a new candidate for the post of Prime Minister after Eugen Tomac withdrew from forming a government. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Details

The new contender for the head of government is Adrian Veștea, who currently chairs the Brașov County Council in the central part of the country.

Tomac had previously advocated for the creation of a technocratic government but failed to secure parliamentary support. Representatives of the legislature expressed the view that a minority government, even without a stable parliamentary majority, would be a more acceptable option than a technocratic cabinet.

The appointment of a new candidate comes amid an ongoing political crisis in Romania that is negatively impacting the country's economic situation.

In particular, the uncertainty surrounding the government's formation has jeopardized Bucharest's access to certain European Union funds and contributed to the national currency falling to record lows.

According to Romanian law, Adrian Veștea has ten days to form a cabinet and obtain a vote of confidence from parliament.
