Poland has begun its six-month presidency of the EU Council, replacing Hungary. The new presidency will focus on defense and security issues, as well as help resolve controversial issues in European legislation.

On January 1, 2025, Poland began its six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union, replacing Hungary. This was reported by DW, according to UNN.

Details

During the presidency, the Polish government will focus on defense and security issues, organize ministerial meetings, and help resolve controversial issues in the process of adopting European laws.

The previous Hungarian presidency was accompanied by a number of scandals. In particular, the Hungarian prime minister made uncoordinated visits to a terrorist country and Beijing, which drew criticism from other member states. As a result, the European Commission distanced itself from the events under the Hungarian presidency, limiting participation to high-level officials.

Poland, which has assumed this responsibility, promises to strengthen EU unity and pay special attention to current security challenges. This presidency is seen as an opportunity to strengthen the common defense policy in the face of new geopolitical realities.
