Over 4.3 million Ukrainians are under temporary protection in the EU

There are 4.33 million Ukrainians under temporary protection in the EU. Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic have hosted the largest number of people.

As of March 31, 2026, 4.33 million people who left Ukraine due to the war held temporary protection status in European Union countries. Compared to the end of February, the number of persons under temporary protection decreased by 68,980 people, or 1.6%. This was reported by Eurostat, according to UNN.

Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic host the largest number of persons with temporary protection status. There are 1,274,955 people in Germany, accounting for 29.4% of the EU total. In Poland, 961,405 people or 22.2% have temporary protection, and in the Czech Republic – 379,820 people or 8.8%.
At the same time, the number of persons under temporary protection increased in 14 EU countries and decreased in 13. The largest increases were recorded in Germany (+7,480 people), Spain (+2,665), and Romania (+2,125). The largest decreases occurred in Italy (-30,365 people), the Czech Republic (-19,810), and Finland (-8,080).
The highest rate of people under temporary protection per thousand inhabitants was recorded in the Czech Republic at 34.8. This is followed by Poland with a rate of 26.3 and Slovakia at 26.2. Meanwhile, the corresponding figure at the EU level was 9.6 per thousand people.
As of March 31, 2026, Ukrainian citizens constituted over 98.4% of the persons who received temporary protection in the EU. Adult women accounted for 43.3% of the total, minors for nearly a third (30.1%), while adult men made up just over a quarter (26.6%).

Minister of Social Policy Denys Ulyutin and European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner discussed the coordination of policies regarding Ukrainians in the EU, including the possible conclusion of the temporary protection regime after March 2027.
