Greek firefighters are battling severe forest fires on the island of Crete for the second day, which continue to spread across Europe after several days of devastating fires in Spain and France.

While fighting the fire, three Greek firefighters died due to strong winds on Crete and the mainland. Two other emergency workers sustained minor injuries.

Two firefighters died after being trapped by a fire on Crete near the village of Kria Vrisi in the center of the island, as they were traveling between fire fronts. Another died in a separate fire in the Peloponnese region. On Wednesday, hundreds of residents and tourists were evacuated from Kria Vrisi and other neighboring villages by sea and land in the center of the island, as strong winds caused the fire to spiral out of control near popular holiday destinations

According to the publication, more than 200 firefighters with dozens of fire engines and water-carrying aircraft were deployed to extinguish the fire. However, the fire destroyed crops and olive groves, and damaged warehouses and several houses.

Unfortunately, there is no improvement in the situation, and the latest information indicates that the wind will strengthen later in the day
