Ukraine is a victim and has the right to defend itself by any means to preserve its territorial integrity and sovereignty, stated Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar, pointing out that security guarantees must be stronger than those adopted in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, writes UNN with reference to PAP and The Guardian.

At a press conference following a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw, Magyar was asked about support for Ukraine and the possibility of ending Russian aggression.

The Hungarian Prime Minister emphasized that "Ukraine is a victim and has the right to defend itself by any means to preserve its territorial integrity and sovereignty."

In his opinion, a ceasefire in the hostilities between Russia and Ukraine needs to be reached as soon as possible. "And then a peace must be concluded that will be stable and guaranteed specifically by the international community," Magyar noted.

Magyar, as noted by The Guardian, said that "the war should be ended as soon as possible, and the international community must guarantee a lasting peace, clearly stating that the necessary guarantees must be stronger than those adopted in the 1994 Budapest Memorandum."

He also drew attention to the large number of casualties on both sides. Magyar recalled that in the summer of 2024, he was the first MEP to travel to Kyiv after Russian troops shelled a children's hospital. He said that he set off for the Ukrainian capital with humanitarian aid in a nearly 30-year-old minibus. "I was in Kyiv when not many people were going there," the Hungarian Prime Minister noted.

The head of the Hungarian government stated that the war in Ukraine must be ended as quickly as possible. "I consider it normal that there are certain differences regarding how to do this, which way is best, and what might threaten escalation. Each EU member state helps in the way it decides," Magyar said.

He announced that he would likely meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss, among other things, the issue of the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.

Magyar again stated that he could meet with Zelenskyy in Zakarpattia20.05.26, 15:59 • 1542 views
