In Poland, the President creates a council for a new constitution; PM Tusk criticized the initiative

Polish President Karol Nawrocki has established an advisory council to prepare a draft for a new national constitution. This was reported by TVP World, according to UNN.

Details

The first members of the body were appointed on May 3 in Warsaw during the celebration of the anniversary of the adoption of the 1791 Constitution. According to the President's plan, the council is to prepare a draft of a so-called "new generation constitution" by 2030.

"Power today is divided between two centers, and institutions such as the armed forces require decisive command,"

Nawrocki stated.

Government Criticism

Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized the initiative, calling it a political maneuver.

"The President knows perfectly well that there is no constitutional majority for his ideas,"

he stated.

Tusk also emphasized that the country needs stability and adherence to the current constitution, rather than new political discussions.

Political Context

Changing the constitution requires the support of two-thirds of the parliament. Poland's current basic law was adopted in 1997 and provides for a key role for the government, headed by the Prime Minister.

The new council includes experts and politicians with diverse views. Among them is the former head of the Constitutional Tribunal, Julia Przyłębska, whose appointment is controversial.

The Constitutional Tribunal was previously at the center of a conflict between Poland and the EU over rule of law issues. Tusk's government does not recognize some of its decisions due to disputes over the legitimacy of the court's composition.
