Greek investigation states drone linked to Ukraine went off course due to malfunction

Investigators in Greece have determined that a sea drone carrying explosives went off course due to a malfunction. Athens believes the craft is Ukrainian, but Kyiv denies this.

Greek investigators have reached a preliminary conclusion that a sea drone found near the island of Lefkada likely lost its course due to a technical malfunction and failed to complete its mission. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

According to the agency's security sources, the drone was packed with explosives and likely veered off course after losing orientation. Greek military and intelligence services are continuing a technical analysis of the craft, including decrypting its metadata and recovering its characteristics through reverse engineering.
Greece claims the drone is Ukrainian, although Kyiv officially denies this. The device was discovered by fishermen on May 7 on the coast of Lefkada, after which the incident caused diplomatic tension between Athens and Kyiv.
Greece considers a drone launch from Libya unlikely
Investigators are also checking whether the drone could have been launched from a ship or from the shore, specifically from Libyan territory across the Mediterranean Sea. At the same time, preliminary results suggest that the craft did not travel a long distance. One of the key factors in the assessment was the remaining fuel.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias called the situation "very serious," emphasizing the risks to civilian shipping.
There were explosives on this vessel, which threatened the safety of navigation. I do not want to think about what a collision between a passenger ship or any other vessel and this drone would mean,
Reuters notes that over the past year, Ukraine has been using sea drones to attack the Russian "shadow fleet," which, according to Kyiv, helps Moscow bypass sanctions and finance the war. Greece has already informed the European Union about the incident and does not rule out a official complaint after the investigation is completed.
