"Shortly before the start of the Summer Olympics in Paris, the federal cabinet wants to approve a declaration of intent on Wednesday for Germany's new Olympic bid. This information was confirmed to ZDF by government sources. The goal is likely to be to apply for the 2040 Summer Games," the publication writes.
Recently, there have been controversial discussions about Germany's bid in 2036. In the federal budget, the "traffic light" government has already provided funding of 2.2 million euros for 2025 for a possible German bid process for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) has already made a fundamental decision to proceed with the application in December last year.
On December 7, the DOSB is said to want to decide on the next steps at its general meeting in Saarbrücken. "We will definitely understand in the first half of 2025 who the applicant is, what we are doing and how we are moving forward," DOSB President Thomas Weikert said on Saturday.
Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, and the Rhineland-Ruhr region have particularly expressed interest in submitting expressions of intent.
The previous Olympic campaigns held in Germany failed due to the resistance and voting of the population of Munich and Hamburg.
