Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and former political security chief Atef Najib have been sentenced to death. They were found guilty of killings and torture during the civil war.

Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Atef Najib, the former head of political security in the southern Syrian province of Daraa, were sentenced to death after being found guilty of crimes committed during the country's civil war, Al Jazeera reports, writes UNN.

On Tuesday, the Criminal Court in Damascus found Assad guilty of intentional murder, while Najib was sentenced for intentional murder and torture.
The court found that the crimes committed by Assad's government in Daraa province in 2011 constituted crimes against humanity.
