Italy (official name – Italian Republic) is a state in Southern Europe, occupying the Apennine Peninsula, as well as the large islands of Sicily and Sardinia. It borders France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia, and is washed by the waters of several seas of the Mediterranean basin, including the Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, Adriatic, and Ionian Seas.
