Asked whether US Vice President J.D. Vance would participate in US-Iran talks expected to take place later this week in Pakistan, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said: "Discussions are ongoing regarding face-to-face talks, but nothing is final until announced by the President or the White House."
The US Vice President was in Hungary, supporting Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of the upcoming elections.
Meanwhile, CNN, citing US officials, reported that the Trump administration is preparing for potential face-to-face talks between American and Iranian officials in the coming days, as both sides work towards a long-term agreement that would end the war between Washington and Tehran.
According to officials, the meeting is likely to take place in Islamabad with Pakistani mediators. They added that this is becoming increasingly possible thanks to a two-week ceasefire announced by the US and Iran on the night of April 8.
The meeting is expected to be attended by Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, son-in-law Jared Kushner, and US Vice President J.D. Vance, officials said. Vance is currently visiting Hungary, and sources indicated that a stop could be added to his trip if the timing is right.
Earlier, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the ceasefire announcement and invited the US and Iranian leadership to come to his country for further talks to "resolve all disputes."
"I sincerely welcome this wise gesture and express my deepest gratitude to the leadership of both countries," Sharif said in a statement on X.
Sharif invited delegations from both Iran and the US to join further talks "to resolve all disputes" in Islamabad on Friday, April 10.
"We sincerely hope that the 'Islamabad talks' will successfully achieve lasting peace, and we look forward to sharing more good news in the coming days!" he said.
CNN writes that the Iranian negotiating team for talks with the United States on Friday, April 10, will be led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran's parliament, ISNA reported on Wednesday.
However, the state news agency Tasnim said that the head of the Iranian delegation has not yet been chosen.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian confirmed that his country will participate in ceasefire talks with the United States in Islamabad on Friday, according to a statement from the office of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, published on Wednesday.
During a 45-minute phone call, Pezeshkian "confirmed that Iran will participate in the talks in Islamabad," the statement said.
Addition
On the night of April 8, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of attacks on Iran. Iran and Israel, following the US, agreed to a two-week ceasefire.
