It is noted that Democratic Senator Dick Durbin asked the secretary during budget hearings whether he expects costs to rise now that the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran has effectively ended.
Hegseth replied that part of the $37.5 billion covers expenses such as feeding troops through the end of the fiscal year
The publication notes that according to preliminary analysis by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the conflict cost the U.S. approximately $40 billion. However, this figure does not include operational costs already accounted for in the department's budget for fiscal year 2026, which exceeds $1 trillion.

In June, the U.S. Department of Defense informed senators of the need for an additional $80 billion to cover the costs of the war with Iran. The request may face resistance due to political disputes.
