Hakan Fidan noted that Turkey supports the United States of America's initiative to end the war in Ukraine, but the parties remain "a little far" from reaching an agreement.
Any proposal will be extremely difficult to digest. But if you look at the other option - even more death and destruction, then I think that any conditions we have... will be more reasonable
According to him, US President Donald Trump "is finally adhering to the agenda of ending the war."
In response to a question about possible security guarantees for Ukraine, Hakan Fidan noted that Europe will not be able to provide them on its own without the support of the United States, but added that a deterrent factor is necessary to prevent the resumption of hostilities.
Great efforts are now being made to re-engage the United States in security support for Ukraine
He added that "we should expect" that all parties, including Russia, will respect any final agreement.
Fidan also reiterated Turkey's offer to host representatives of Russia and Ukraine for possible peace talks.
Responding to a question about Trump's sharp change in transatlantic security policy, including closer ties with Russia, Fidan said this could be an opportunity for Europe to become more independent of the United States.
